Refugee Support Group

Sponsorship News October 17, 2019

THANKS to you we have raised $22,834!!

Due to the generosity and hard work of parishioners, parish groups, family and friends, MMOC has raised the minimum financial requirement to sponsor 3 more refugees!

Thanks to Nic Messner, Gérald St-Laurent and their band for the lively concert Oct. 5 which raised $1,830!

If you missed out, it is not too late to donate. The additional funds will give our newcomers a better chance for success. Special donation envelopes (printed green) are available in the Atrium and can be deposited in the collection basket during mass.  (cheques can be made payable to Mary Mother of the Church)

Who are you sponsoring? Our committee hopes to reunite a family in our parish with 3 relatives from DR Congo presently living in a Ugandan refugee camp where daily living is still very unsafe.
What can I do to help? Right now we need to raise $23,000. Use the green envelopes to make a donation and put it in the collection basket during mass. Donations are tax deductible (use cash or make cheques payable to ‘Mary Mother Church’)We currently have $22,843.
If they don't arrive for 2-3 years, why are we collecting now? Immigration Canada will only process the applications once the money is in the bank.
Do you need household goods? We do not need house wares because the 3 people will live with a family.
How can I volunteer my time? We will need volunteers once the refugees arrive. Our group provides orientation, transportation, health care, education, language, housing, food, clothing, community and emotional support.
When will the people arrive? The immigration paperwork was submitted spring of 2019, it takes 2-3 years for them to arrive in Winnipeg if approved.
How do you choose refugees? This year we chose to assist relatives of a family at our parish this time. In the past, we welcome whomever Canadian Immigration sends giving no preference to religion, culture, gender, age, sexual orientation etc.
What is your success rate? Since 2007 we have a high success of refugees being independent and employed. We have sponsored people from Bhutan/Nepal and Cote d’Ivoire. Some children from years ago are now attending university! Other adults 'pay it forwards' by helping new arrivals creating a cycle of help.
How do you know the amount of money to raise? We set goals according to Canada Immigration sponsorship chart. This is equal to social assistance for 1 year plus start-up costs.
What is your mission? Our goal is to create independent contributing members of society. Helping people get started keeps them healthy, employed, educated. This contributes to the well-being of our society.
Special thanks to the Knights of Columbus and the Youth Choir for contributing a portion of their fundraisers!
Thank you for your support!
